Mousetale Puppets
  • Black-out: The hall/room must be completely dark. All windows must be blacked-out entirely using the thickest of materials. I carry an extensive black-out kit and can tackle many venues myself, but only by prior arrangement - so I can assess the room and gauge the work and time involved; for this purpose I will normally ask for photographs of the room you plan to use. Please call for further advice.

  • Height: Minimum ceiling height of 2.42m

  • Area: The room needs to be cleared. Minimum performing area is 4.5m wide by 2.5m deep, with a further 2.5m between performing area and audience. (Total depth: 5m) Ample floor space needed to erect 2 lighting stands, 1 near each end of the front row. I tend not to use a stage in schools. (These area requirements vary slightly from production to production.)

  • Equipment: I use my own sound & lighting. Where available, dimmable house lighting may be helpful (fade to black before show). Non-dimmable lights should be left off.

  • Power: 2 x 13A power points.

  • Get in: 2 hours 30 mins (theatres), 2 hours minimum (schools). (Plus extra hour for Incas show.) Difficult access, or black-out work will add time to both get-in and out.

  • Get out: 1 hour 30 mins. (Plus extra 30 mins preferred for Incas show.)

  • Access: There is a great deal of heavy equipment involved so I need to get the van as close as possible. Direct access preferred via fire exit/stage door (especially if ramped).

  • Audience Size: Recommended max: 120. Absolute max: 150. (Consider 2 performances.)

  • Introduction: I require a member of staff to introduce the show. I need to speak to this person before the audience comes in. Please obtain my clearance before opening house.
If you're not sure about any of the above please phone me for advice on 07740 980481. There are usually ways round technical problems and black-out problems. I can help you find a working solution!
See also Booking Terms and Conditions which are part of our Agreement once a booking is made.
  • Show Duration & Extra Performances: Shows last 35-45 minutes plus time to meet a few of the puppets afterwards. Allow 1 hour. If you have a group of more than 120, consider having 2 performances. Extra performances offer great value at schools prices, especially for larger groups or where there is no space big enough, or dark enough, to accommodate everyone in one sitting. (Additional performances must be in the same place on the same day.) There is no minimum audience size.
  • Age-suitability: Shows are broadly suitable for ages 4-11. Stories are aimed more at Nursery to P4 but the whole experience has proven very valuable for upper school too, especially when followed by a Q&A session. The show is in the dark! Nurseries should prepare children for this in advance. Most nursery audiences include 3 year-olds with no problems - please call to discuss if you’re not sure. Workshops can be tailored to the age and ability of the group.
  • Curriculum for Excellence: Puppetry is a uniquely cross-curricular activity which integrates well with the aims and ethos of the Curriculum for Excellence. Workshops, in particular, help children of all ages to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors. CfE prescribes that every child should experience the energy and excitement of a live performance. Puppetry provides an accessible and fun way for Primary and Nursery children to gain that experience. It's also a vehicle for engaging children of all abilities and confidence levels in drama activities which are age-appropriate and unintimidating. CfE recognises the valuable role of visiting professionals in meeting its objectives and enriching children's creative development. See the workshops page or phone to discuss how a workshop can help facilitate true interdisciplinary learning. If you can, book a show along with your workshop as this really inspires the children towards excellence. I will be more than happy to talk to groups afterwards about all aspects of the creative process, running the puppet theatre as a business, and my own journey from Primary school pupil to successful professional.
